Cultural Contact Point Slovenia is inviting you to the international conference on networking in the cultural sector, Re-network!
Networking in arts and culture has had a long tradition in Europe and there is hardly any professional organisation that is not a member of at least one international network. However, networks as well are facing radical changes affecting cultural industries: new technologies enabling free flow of works and information, audience being transformed into active users…
With the special emphasis put on the intercultural dialogue between the EU and SEE the conference’s aim is to find out how ”old” and ”new” cultural networks respond to these circumstances and how they manage the problem of free flow of information especially if relevant to transnational cooperation.
The conference will be opened with the introductory speeches by Barbara Kozelj, director-general of the Directorate for Art, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia and Marko Peljhan, ambassador of […]

SICA (The Service Centre for International Cultural Activities) invited me to write an 1800-word article for their Magazine about the state of contemporary art in the Middle East and Arab world. Of course this is entirely impossible because an undertaking like that would require at least 18.000 words. In addition, I could only write about the places I had spent time in, and had undertaken research in, which left North Africa, Syria, and large parts of the Gulf out. Can you imagine doing a similar exercise about the state of contemporary art in Europe? It’s an impossible task to start out with, yet I will not deny that there are similarities…just as much as we can find similarities between Germany and The Netherlands, if we look hard enough. Nevertheless, the SICA seemed quite pleased with my effort, and since my attempt at poetic prose and nuance got abbreviated and rather […]
On Sunday, May 25, we led a discussion at the Biennale on “Exploring the Opportunities of Digital Tools”, moderated by LabforCulture and featuring guests Alessandro Ludovico, a media critic and editor in chief of Neural magazine (based in Bari actually!), and Taylor Nuttall, Chief Executive of folly (UK). The session was attended by a wide range of artists and practitioners of many different ages and with varying amounts of experience using online and digital tools. Participants came from countries all over the wider Europe and the Mediterranean, such as Bulgaria, Egypt, France, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey and Italy.
The workshop was a lively and practical session around the use of technologies by artists and cultural practitioners to collaborate, create and disseminate. Alessandro and Taylor gave participants personal and innovative examples of how they could work together and create with the help of digital tools (including free and open source software […]
After our workshop on Sunday afternoon (which we will report on tomorrow), we had a chance to enjoy the atmosphere of the Biennale on a night that organisers felt was the busiest yet.
I know Puglia. I have been visiting, and have even lived here, over the past 13 years. Before coming to the Biennale, I could not imagine that there would be such a great, high level of local engagement and to be honest, I never imagined such a quick turnaround. Let me explain…
Let’s say 10 years ago, when I came here, few people wanted to speak English or another language, nor could, and in my experience this continued up until 2 years ago. Bari had a difficult reputation. For these reasons, being here now and seeing how the city of Bari has developed, as well as how its inhabitants are experiencing the Biennale, is amazing. So many local people […]
