Open call for international artists and groups to collaborate with companies in Catalonia

DISONANCIAS is a platform that promotes joint investigation projects between artists and industries, research labs or public organizations, and it seeks to introduce artists as catalysts in larger teams to incentivate creativity, work methodologies and lateral thinking.

The programme is based on the understanding of innovation as a tool for social improvement rather as an end itself. Hence it gives priority of participation to entities committed to social responsibility and sustainable development and those artists or groups of artists who share these commitments and have an interest for interacting in areas beyond the strictly artistic. The results from these collaborations must therefore aspire to go beyond success in the marketplace or public acceptance to foster values of diversity, balance, sustainability, flexibility and the spirit of risk in our society.
For the present call, five entities will conduct the following research projects in collaboration with the selected artists (or groups). The investigations will be […]

CALLING ALL ARTISTS – The Body as Source

Transitions Dance Company was founded by Bonnie Bird (1914-1995), and is the UK’s leading graduate dance company set up to bridge the gap between education and professional training.
Each year the company of 10-12 dancers work with 3 choreographers to create 3 new, fresh and unique pieces of dance (to be toured as part of the Transitions repertory) and 1 research artist (to develop ideas experimentally, using and collaborating with the dancers).
Each artist works with the company for 3-5 weeks and are sourced from all over the world; home-grown and international, established and emerging. This allows the company to gain an insight in to the creative process of each artist. Laban aims to find artists, who show an intelligence, an understanding of their craft, a commitment to experimentation and have strong conceptual ideas.
We are currently looking for artists from all genres (film artists, fine artists, photographers, designers, sculptors) […]

How do we measure the level of professionalism in cultural management? Former McDonald’s executive to run Italy’s museums

Cultural management is an interdisciplinary field, lying in between the managerial, marketing and economic competences and skills, and the profound understanding of cultural history and heritage, trends and developments in the arts. We have more than 130 academic programs and training courses for professionals across Europe, with various angles and curricula, most of them members of the European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centers.
During our seminars and conferences, we often debate the questions: What do we actually need to become successful managers in the arts? is there a strong need for a specialised training? Or this is a profession where you “learn by doing”? Do you need to necessarily understand the art, or is more important to have an entrepreneurship and managerial spirit and intuition? Or both? How to get a job in the government sector, especially when instead of transparency of the vacancy, the appointment is a result […]

How soon is now - Too slow

Here’s my final post from the “How soon is now” conference. I should have posted it last over a week ago but things got messy Anyway, it’s been good to have a week to digest things.
When I first saw the title of this conference “How soon is now?” I immediately thought about Nina Simones song “Mississippi godamm”. I thought about the part where she says “Desegregation” and the chorusgoes “too slow”.
mass participation - too slow - unification - too slow
Then I thought that “How soon is now” sounded like another tune I’ve heard and I googled it and it turned out to be a Morrisey-tune. I went out there and read the lyrics a couple of times but I didn’t really get the connection between the Morrisey-tune and the theme of the seminar so I had to ask Tomas Bokstad (one of the organizers) and he after a while […]

Artist residencies

Travel and residencies in other, sometimes completely unfamiliar, environments for contemporary artists often makes constitutional part of their artistic practices. Artist residency programmes are one of the ways how artists can spend time in other countries, cities and communities meeting different cultures and working principles, but also having almost ideal conditions for work and research. These programs exist in many countries and they offer to artists space for living and working for a defined period of time. Each residency programme offers different model of financial support, accommodation and working conditions and each of them has a different proposition which artist has to meet when applying.
Here you can find few open calls for artists residencies in Italy.

ARTISTS’ RESIDENCIES in the SOUTH OF ITALYApplications are being accepted for 2009 Residencies at Palazzo Rinaldi, the only artists’ residence active in the South of Italy. Hosted in an elegant XIXth century Palazzo, artists are […]
